Fuji-san

Natural Dyes on Upcycled Canvas, 2022

165 x 178 cm

The pursuit of climbing Mount Fuji can be considered a spiritual pilgrimage, within the Shintoist religion where it is thought of as sacred land, and a sacred being as the volcanic mountain is widely referenced in the Japanese language with the honorific suffix, Fuji-san. Through this referencing, the painting seeks to explore a better co-exitance with non-human systems. Fuji-san's materiality aims to align with better co-existence through the upcycling of old canvas fabrics and use of natural dyes to embody a sense of resourcefulness of our ancestors.
