Drift

Carved driftwood, 41 x 11 x 6cm

Drawing Inks painted on wall, 369 x 244 cm

Charcoal on canvas, 120 x 180 x 5cm

‘Drift’ draws a comparison between the 1989 anthology film Mystery Train (MT) to rivers. This work is motivated by a desire to explore cultural intersections and family histories, following significance of names and places.

The painted walls, charcoal and carved driftwood is used to reflect the ephemerality and interconnectedness that ties the river to MT. The driftwood was collected in Miho Masaki Beach, Shizouka. It is silken smooth and timeworn, shaped by years of submersion in water, carrying the memory of its past. It mimics the journeys travelled by the characters in MT described as ‘drifters’ and their overlapping narratives.

The film is filled with silences, pauses, looks and the unsaid. The wonder of Memphis for the characters turns out to be the motel, train interior, train station… I have focused on the first of three stories following Jun and Mitsuko in Far from Yokohama.
